Job Description :
The Research
Substance Use Disorders (SUDs) are highly prevalent in society, have their first symptom onset during adolescence and are highly comorbid with other mental disorders and symptoms. Dr. Patricia Conrod’s research team studies the causes and consequences of adolescent onset substance use behaviours, and their longer-term relationship to mental health concerns and addiction. Using multi-modal longitudinal research designs, this research has shown that substance use behaviours can be predicted by a set of pre-morbid psychological, genetic and neurocognitive factors, which can be targeted in preventative psychosocial interventions.

Dr. Conrod’s research on targeted prevention for substance use disorders has led to the development of an intervention program that has proven effective in the prevention of substance misuse and mental health problems amongst high risk youth. Using large, community-based cluster-randomised designs testing effectiveness and implementation models, Dr. Conrod’s research team is currently evaluating new methods to scale up and scale out evidence-based drug and alcohol prevention to address high risk behaviours among youth in North America and globally.

Professor Conrod’s research laboratory manages multiple genetic-neuroimaging longitudinal studies, as well as many large randomised-controlled longitudinal studies. Using advanced computational modeling of multi-modal data, this research has led to the discovery of neurodevelopmental risk profiles. This research has been published in the top scientific and medical journals, including Science, Nature, British Medical Journal, JAMA-Psychiatry, Canadian Journal of Psychiatry and American Journal of Psychiatry.
